The MITRA project unites a team of scientists based in Switzerland (Basel, Bern) and France (Marseilles): to develop a detailed network of paleoclimate reconstructions from speleothems, lake/wetland and marine sediments in SW Asia, covering the past ~11,500 years. The purpose of these reconstructions will be to document variations in regional climate and environmental conditions in unprecedented detail, which will be subsequently used to test and validate state-of-the-art regional climate model simulations. MITRA will also provide the data that are urgently needed by archaeologists and historian to investigate the climatic-environmental-human connections in the recent and distant past.
